SCHOLARSHIPS:
In order to be fair to all families, AYSO requires proof of financial need in order to give a scholarship. Participation in any income-based state or federal assistance program automatically qualifies your player. Programs include: Oregon Trail, Oregon Health Plan, Free or reduced meal programs, WIC. We can also discuss payments options with you if you need additional help or do not qualify for one of these programs. We try VERY hard to put every child who wants to play on a team with the appropriate gear.
Q: We qualify for a scholarship, how can I pay?
- Pay by mail: If you have one of the above forms of ID, send a photocopy of your card or letter along with your payment and your child’s signed registration form.
- Pay in person: Bring your proof of scholarship, your child’s printed registration form & check or cash for $50 to our in-person registration dates and a volunteer will process your registration. (See below for registration dates & times)
Q: I don’t have access to a computer or am unable to register on-line. What other options do I have?
Come to one of our in-person registrations – there will be volunteers available to help with all of your questions. Payments at in-person registration need to be via check or cash only; we do not have a card scanner for debit/credit cards.
Saturday, July 10th 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (done)
Tuesday, July 20th 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. (done)
ADDED: Saturday, August 14th from 1 – 4 p.m.
ALL in-person registrations are held at 4697 Isabelle Street, Eugene, 97402 click here for map.
Q: Can I request a ‘buddy’ or a particular coach for my player?
Sure! - write the person’s first & last name on the top of your player’s registration form if you are registering in-person. On-line registration requests can be made in the “play with siblings” box.
The team formation crew will make every effort to match your child with the request. Please remember, this is a REQUEST, not a guarantee. Often a request is not able to be fulfilled because the “buddy” is in a different age division or the coach has decided to take a season off or coach another sport. However, we will make every effort to match players with friends of the appropriate age and/or coaches volunteering at the appropriate age division.
Q: How do I know what ‘division’ my player is in?
See web-site under “age chart” to calculate your player’s division.
Q: Can I drop my paperwork & payment off anytime at the Isabelle Street address?
NO, PLEASE DON’T – this address is the ‘AYSO Office’ only during the hours listed above for in-person registration and at other pre-arranged times for trainings, & board meetings, etc. Otherwise it is a private business with regular operating hours. Unless you’re interested in buying cabinets & countertops, please refrain from coming to the office at non-AYSO times.
Q: If I can’t drop it off, how do I get the paperwork to the office?
Send by mail to: AYSO Registration
P.O. Box 2998
Eugene, OR 97402
Q: Will I get a phone call or e-mail confirming my registration?
Yes, and no. . . You will get a confirmatoin email if you sign up via eayso.org. However, if you sign up at a a walk-in registration, you will not get an email or phone call confirming your registration. but At this point, our volunteers are focused on recruiting, training, forming teams, returning calls from new parents, etc. If your payment has been processed by your credit or debit card company, then we have your paperwork. If you are very concerned, go ahead and e-mail us with your child’s name and date of birth and we’ll check to make sure and let you know.
Q: Why don’t I get an immediate call back when I leave a message?
AYSO is an all-volunteer organization and while we have some amazing volunteers, we don’t have enough staff to answer the phone 24/7. We use an answering service to take messages and then the messages are routed to the appropriate volunteer. The appropriate volunteer will return phone calls & e-mail during his/her volunteer time.
Q: I ‘pre-registered’ on-line. When will my bill arrive?
It won’t arrive at all. The pre-registration process is designed to give parents a quick and easy way to get all of the paperwork filled out at home. Parents are responsible for printing the registration forms, signing & dating and submitting those forms with the appropriate payment before the deadline (either by mail or in person). If you register & pay on-line, there is no need to print, sign and return the registration forms.
Q: What are the season dates?
Practices begin the first week of September. First day of games is September 11th – game schedules will be made available to coaches & posted on the web-site earlier that week. For planning purposes, count on your player(s) being on the field for games on Saturday, September 11th somewhere between 9a.m. and 2p.m. Games are typically held at Churchill High School between 9a.m. and 2p.m.. Older divisions (U-10 and up) will ‘travel’ to Springfield for a few of their games. Games on September 11th ONLY will be held at Madison Middle School fields. The 4J School District is using the fields at Churchill for another activity on September 11th, so we will be moved this one day only.
Q: My child is new to soccer – what do they need to know or be ready to do?
AYSO requires every player to have the following ‘skills’:
- Positive outlook toward team sports,
- Willingness to participate to the best of his/her ability at every practice & game,
- Respect for coaches, referees, & other AYSO volunteers, and finally,
- Good Sportsmanship on the field during a game, on the practice field, on the sidelines, on the way to and from the car.
If your child has been taught or learned these things at home and/or is willing to learn these things on our fields, then AYSO will be a perfect fit.
Q: My child is new to soccer – what does he/she need to wear or bring for practice?
- Equipment: shinguards covered by socks, cleats recommended for older divisions, filled water bottle to each practice & game, soccer ball
- AYSO Uniform Kit: Includes 2 jerseys, 1 pair black shorts, and 1 pair black socks - $35.
Q: Where can I get equipment and/or the uniform kit?
Uniform kits are available for sale on August 28th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $35 at this sale – kit includes 1 blue jersey, 1 red jersey, 1 pair of black shorts, 1 pair of black socks. Typically, the kit will last your player from 2 to 4 seasons, so the cost per season is very low. We will also have LOTS of other equipment for sale on this date including age-appropriate balls, ball bags, cleats, extra socks & shorts, shinguards, soccer backpacks, water bottles, practice jerseys, etc. The sale will be at the AYSO Office (aka Oregon Pride Cabinets), address above.
Q: Does my player really need the kit to play?
YES. The uniform is required. As of Fall 2010 season, players not wearing the AYSO uniform will not be allowed to play at games. If you cannot afford a uniform, then PLEASE send an e-mail or call – we can help.
The ‘old’ AYSO jersey (reversible) will no longer be allowed on game fields. It is okay to wear it to practices. Please do not wait until the day before games to ask for help. We may not have uniforms left at that time and it will take about a week for any new orders to arrive.
Q: When/where/how long are practices?
Your child will be placed on a team as close to his/her ‘home’ school as possible. The actual location for practices depends upon the coach’s preference. This is one of the perks of volunteering. In general, practices are twice per week and will last from 45 minutes to 1 ½ hours, depending on the age of your player. Most coaches practice on Tuesday & Thursday late afternoons/early evenings. However, some may practice on a Monday/Wednesday schedule. Again, it is the coach’s choice because they are the one volunteering their time & energy. Some coaches will ask for team input on the schedule, but it is not required.
Q: How does AYSO differ from other soccer/sports programs?
Eugene AYSO is a co-ed, all volunteer, player-focused soccer organization. We encourage our parents & players to have fun playing soccer in a family-friendly environment. If you experience something on the practice or game field that does not meet these standards, please share your concerns with your coach, the referee (after the game), and AYSO Board Members. We encourage our parents to be part of the solution and to be fair to all players and volunteers and their families. You can reach all AYSO Board Members through our message line at 541-484-1149. In addition, AYSO board meetings, which occur the second Wednesday of every month, are open to AYSO members.
Q: Who are the coaches?
Coaches for your child’s team are all volunteers. Most are parents like you. We also have many volunteers from U of O, LCC, as well as community members. All AYSO volunteers are the same in that they all undergo a background check once per year, do Safe Haven training once per year (teaches appropriate interaction with kids & first aid basics) and attend age specific coach training each season. Coaches must have completed a background check and training. AYSO is serious about keeping all of our kids safe on our fields and about providing them with a fun environment to learn to play soccer & to learn sportsmanship, teamwork and self-confidence.
Q: Is it OK to bring our dog to practices & games?
Unfortunately, NO. Many of the fields we use belong to the 4J School District. The District has a ‘no dogs’ policy. In addition, as part of AYSO’s primary focus on safety for our kids, we also have a ‘no pets’ policy. Most of us love dogs, just not at AYSO games or practices. Please allow our volunteers to focus on the kids; take personal responsibility for your pet by keeping it home or with a friend.
Q: Can I get a refund if my player is hurt during the season/changes his or her mind/ doesn’t like getting rained on or isn’t enjoying the experience?
Refunds are given as long as a written refund request is received by the AYSO office no later than the first game of the season. In the case of player injury, refunds are given for the portion of the season that the player will miss. Complete details on refund requirements are posted here.
Q: I can help out – what exactly needs to be done?
Here’s a partial list . . . .
Field lining (once per week – typically 2 to 3 hours per week). We have a lining machine, paint, equipment and a trailor. We can deliver the trailer with all of the equipment to the field if needed.
Phone calls (return messages, give basic information) – must have e-mail access.
Uniform sales (staff uniform sales table, help parents decide what size to select, fill out sales slip to be taken to the cash table)
Gear Up! Sale – help stock tables with equipment the afternoon/evening before the sale. Help out at sale with restocking/reorganizing tables, answering questions, helping size cleats/shinguards. Help out after the sale to take inventory and return unsold goods to storage.
Day of games: help prep fields for games by placing cones & flags where needed, line garbage cans with new bags, pickup any litter of fields. After games are over, help clean off our equipment and load into truck, collect lost & found items.
Mailing help – stick labels, stamps
Office help – sort registration forms, enter into computer, print copies, laminate signs for fields.
Equipment help – put together coach & referee equipment bags according to lists provided, blow up balls using ball compressor, assemble first aid kits, label all equipment.
Field help - team coaches & assistant coaches; team referees and assistant referees.
Banners – put up and take down registration banners around town – must have a truck or SUV to safely carry banners and posts.
